How to Stop Common Juicing Mistakes

  1. Juicing does not have to be expensive – source your fruit and vegetables from local markets, buy in bulk and haggle for bargains at the end of the day!  Make friends with your local traders – ask them to source unusual varieties of fruit and vegetables and in return let them sample your results.

  2. Don’t be too adventurous too early – start with your favourite fruit and vegetables, adding additional flavours as you go.  Don’t make your recipes overly complex, enjoy and savour each flavour.

  3. Beware of citrus fruit skins that may have harmful toxins – peel grapefruits and oranges, however remember that the pithy parts just under the skin contain the most nutrients.

  4. Don’t store homemade juice for more than 24 hours – it’s best to drink it fresh. If you must store it, use an opaque, airtight container with no air inside. To remove air, you can either add filtered water or use a food saver to suck out the excess air.

  5. It sounds obvious but follow the instructions in your juicers manual – cut the produce into pieces small enough to fit into your machine. Remove larger, hard pieces, such as peach pits and stalks.

And why not try out our recipes and let us know what you think?  We’d love to hear your feedback!

Finally remember that you don’t need to rush out and purchase an expensive juicer and a fridge full of fresh fruits and vegetables in order to enjoy a healthier lifestyle.  Just follow our simple tips above together with the information on our web pages and you can experience the benefits of juicing for yourself.

Is Juicing Bad for You?

Packed with vitamins, enzymes, and minerals, fruit also contains naturally occurring sugar, that has the same effect on your body as sweets or chocolate; high blood sugar and insulin levels = fat storage.

So, what’s the solution? The base of every good juice should be a vegetable – fruits are juicing additives, so use them much more sparingly! Here are a few tricks to ensure your juices and smoothies are as healthy as possible;

  • – Use lemon or lime juice – a little goes a long way.
  • – An apple adds sweetness to a juice.
  • – A grapefruit provides lots of flavour and added weight loss benefits!

Why use vegetable juice instead?  It contains half as many calories as fruit juice and helps to ensure blood sugar levels remain stable. In addition vegetable juice helps to keep that full feeling for longer to avoid any snacking cravings you might have.

Try a mix of carrot and parsley to end any temptations!

What are the benefits of juicing?

Juicing is the best way to get your recommended six to eight servings a day. (Potassium, iron, vitamin C), and enjoy a delicious drink at the same time.

Juicing allows the immediate absorption of all the nutrients from fruit and vegetables.

Juicing provides versatility- it helps you to enjoy more varieties than you would normally eat.

Juicing aids the digestive process and gives it a little break – it takes less energy to digest the produce as a liquid than as solid foods.

Juicing can help raise the pH balance in our bodies; helping to protect us from conditions related to acidic imbalances, including heart and kidney disease, osteoporosis, and diabetes.

So, the great news is that juicing is good for you!  Start now by downloading a taster of our recipe book to find out more about delicious and healthy juices and smoothies that you can make at home today!

How Fresh Pressed Juice can Help You Manage Your Sugar Cravings

When you get sugar cravings don’t just reach for cake, sweets or biscuits- you are not only perpetuating your craving for sugar but also making unhealthy choices!

The sugar in these treats (a simple carbohydrate) is quickly converted to glucose in your bloodstream. Blood sugar levels rise when simple carbs are eaten alone – for example, when you grab a mid-afternoon chocolate bar.

Our ‘sugar high’ happens because simple carbs are absorbed quickly and so we get a temporary ‘hit’ that wears off leaving our cravings even stronger, and the cycle beings again!

Low-sugar fruit and vegetable juices provide nutrition and prevent blood sugar levels from becoming too high. A scale called the glycaemic index rates foods based on their effect on blood sugar. A food that increases blood sugar quickly has a high score on the index, a food that slowly increases blood sugar has a low score. A glycaemic score below 55 is considered low.

140721aHow freshly pressed juice can help manage your sugar cravings?

Of course simple carbs are also found in fruit and vegetables – the ingredients of Juices and Smoothies- but the great news is that the fibre and protein in fruit and vegetables slow down the absorption of natural sugars as well as providing wholesome nutrients.  This means that sugar ‘highs’ are avoided and the glucose in the blood stream remains stable – avoiding those craving feelings.

Low-sugar juices that provide nutrition and prevent blood sugar levels from becoming too high are an excellent way to help manage your sugar craving.

Tips to manage sugar cravings:

  • – Use vegetables that grow above ground – they contain less natural sugar
  • – Incorporate root vegetables (carrots, beetroot etc.) in smaller amounts
  • – Use fruits that are low on the Glycaemic index  – Grapefruit, Cherries, Pears and Apples
  • – Add herbs and spices -Cinnamon, garlic, turmeric, oregano, and ginger are helpful in reducing blood sugar levels and add great flavour – although you may want to restrict the garlic to the vegetable only juices!

Thumbs up to Juicing!

Normally fibre from fruit and vegetables passes through our system without fully releasing the nutrients to our bodies. Juicing enables us to receive the nutrients directly and in a highly concentrated form.

Thumbs down to shop bought juices

Whilst it may be convenient to pick up a cartoon of your favourite juice along with your weekly shop, pre-packaged juices are not comparable to freshly pressed juices.

The manufacturing process involved in shop bought juices reduces the amount of nutrients and thus reduces the benefits of drinking juice. More fibre is removed from commercial juices and they are pasteurized and are often blended with a number of preservatives and additives to improve shelf life.

Thumbs up to freshly prepared juices!

Fresh juice from fresh produce made in your kitchen can’t get any more nutritious, especially if consumed as soon as possible after preparation. If you pick locally grown, seasonal fruits and vegetables……..even better!

Antioxidants protect the body’s cells and DNA from damage; compounds called Phytonutrients that act as antioxidants in our body and are found in fruits, vegetables and their juices. They work with other plant nutrients to help protect against disease and promote good health.

Whether you are young or old, new to juicing or an active juicer remember that juicing is good for your health.  Juicing

  • – Flushes toxins from your body
  • – Helps your body absorb more key nutrients from its intake
  • – Rejuvenates your cells
  • – Is good for your heart
  • – Contains no saturated fats
  • – Has no added sugar or sodium
  • – Vegetables do not increase insulin levels
  • – Increases energy

Staying Healthy at Summer Festivals

Summer Berries – Add to your festival packing list. Summer berries are packed with water, fibre, and B vitamins to keep you feeling fresh and energized.  They will last well in your cooler and there is no need to chop or slice; just pop a handful in your mouth for a big boost.

Coconut Water  –  Overflowing with potassium, coconut water is great when you’ve been out late or you’re just busy running around in the sun. It helps to settle an upset stomach, aids digestion, is great for the skin and boosts hydration – making it the ultimate hangover cure for the morning after the night before.

Citrus –  High levels of vitamin C will help keep you healthy amongst the large festival crowds. Grapefruit and orange slices make a refreshing and delicious snack, but lemon provides the most benefits.  Lemons have strong antibacterial, antiviral, and immune-boosting powers, as well as providing digestive aid and liver cleanser.

Almonds  – If you are starting to feel weak or fatigued, grab a handful of almonds.  A great source of almonds will also help to stabilize your blood sugar levels, if you have been over indulging in sugary alcoholic drinks.

Bananas  – Laden with potassium and magnesium, bananas are an ideal way to get your electrolytes up. They also keep your bowels healthy, provide nutrients that regulate heart rhythm and have vitamin compounds for eye health.
